New Briggate has a fascinating past and one of its more vibrant incarnations was as a former parade route for the iconic Leeds West Indian Carnival. To celebrate this creative heritage, the Carnival Legacy: Pop-up Street Performance saw the street come alive with the vibrant colours and joy of Carnival once again.
With steel-pan, soca and calypso, the street was filled with an explosion of music, dance, colourful costumes, and storytelling. We’re delighted to share a selection of images of the day so that you can share in the Carnival vibes.
The Carnival Legacy: Pop-up Street Performance is part of our Hidden Histories of New Briggate project. The project – supported by Leeds City Council and Historic England as part of the New Briggate High Street Heritage Action Zone regeneration programme – is all about bringing people together, through art, to explore the culture and heritage of the historic high street, New Briggate.
