The Take Away Art series has been produced as part of our Hidden Histories of New Briggate project, which is supported and funded by Leeds City Council and Historic England. The project is all about bringing people together, through art, to explore the culture and heritage of the historic high street, New Briggate.
We commissioned nine artists via an open call to create an artwork inspired by the street that considers time, the transformation of the city, and what brings people together. The artworks have been reproduced on everyday things that visitors to the street might ordinarily come across. So you might stumble upon art on a beer mat in North Bar, a print inside your record sleeve at Relic Records, or on a paper bag with your purchase from West Yorkshire Cameras.
From ghosts at Leeds Grand Theatre to the salacious past of the old Central Hotel, New Briggate has lots of tales to tell. Through this project, we’re sharing this important cultural heritage in imaginative and intriguing ways; safeguarding the stories of this special street.
An exhibition of all the Take Away Art artworks is currently on display at North Bar, and a full collection of Take Away Art postcards are available at Leeds Grand Theatre and Opera North. The Take Away Art is available in a limited run so you’ll need to be quick if you want them all!
