We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Tony Tomlin on Christmas Eve, 2024.

Tony Tomlin was a much-loved and well-known resident of Chapeltown and a regular at our Union 105 studio space. ‘Local Legend Genius’ is written on the front of his application form for the 2010 Union 105 Salon, a fitting description of Tony — a force of nature and a pillar of creativity in Leeds.

We were fortunate to work with Tony often. He was a familiar face in countless exhibitions across Leeds and at Union 105, being one of the winners of the 2010 Union 105 Salon. In 2011, we published Do Not Touch: Tony Tomlin, a book that delved into his experiences as an artist in Chapeltown. His work, filled with humour and honesty, reflected his deep ties to the local community, exploring identity, religion, and everyday life through a unique way of seeing.

A portrait of Tony hangs proudly in the side annexe of East Street Arts’ office—a lasting tribute to his artistic spirit and a reminder of the importance of nurturing creativity.

Celebrate Tony’s life with others on the 24 January, at Harehills Lane Baptist Church from 11 am
