East Street Arts has been supporting artists since 1993. Creating space for artists in our villages, towns and cities is one of the many ways we achieve this. In addition to our permanent studio spaces in Leeds, we’ve placed over 2,000 artists across more than 500 temporary spaces nationally in light industrial, commercial, retail, and office spaces that were otherwise vacant and unproductive for landlords.
We have successfully occupied empty commercial spaces, through temporary leases, since 2011. By housing artists, we have reduced mitigation and insurance rates for landlords and, thereafter, returned the units with no interior alterations or lasting impact on the spaces. All whilst supporting local artists.
The benefits
The many benefits include building guardianship, reduced insurance costs, rates mitigation, driving footfall, placemaking, community engagement, and activation of the space and area.
Many types of creatives make use of these flexible and affordable spaces, including individual artists, theatre makers, dancers, photographers, digital artists and community organisations, to name a few. Within these spaces, artists meet, practice, research and develop, often building connections to the local community and in many cases activating areas in an interesting and curious way.
