This report is the culmination of a five-year artist-led sector support programme, funded by Arts Council England.
Established in 2018, Guild was an ambitious extension of our work supporting artists and artist-led spaces over many years. First-hand experience working in the artist-led sector exposed a variety of challenges that, historically, self-organised spaces face repeatedly: being under-resourced and prone to burnout.
The development of these spaces is often time-sensitive, as they face rapid growth in some communities, and crippling austerity measures in others. They are under constant threat of funding and budget cuts, changes to business rates, legislation for their use and property development schemes. Guild was born in response to these barriers, to create a programme of support dedicated to artist spaces and collectives.
The publication contextualises and documents Guild’s approach, programme of activity, collaborations and research, legacy and next steps. The evaluation provides practical recommendations and suggestions on how to inform future development, funding and activities.
