An event sharing experiences, work made, and development of their practice during their respective residencies in Taipei and Leeds in 2025 and 2024.
Wednesday 9 April
5:30 pm – 8 pm
Convention House, East Street Arts, St Mary’s Lane, Leeds, LS9 7DP
Join us at Convention House on Wednesday 9 April 2025 for an evening with Taipei-based artist Zhao Ruo Tong and Leeds-based artist James Thompson, as they present work developed during their residencies exploring community, memory, and place through film, installation, and storytelling.
During her residency, Zhao Ruo Tong engaged communities in Leeds around memories of mangoes, tracing their colonial histories and connections through cooking. During this time she has mapped the journeys that people have taken to get to Leeds, as well as developed video work working with people to explore their use of mango as a food and its cultural significance.
James Thompson will present recent work developed during his 2024 residency at Treasure Hill Artist Village in Taipei, Taiwan. During his residency he spent six weeks making new work, exploring his methodologies and practice and connecting to new communities.
The residency is a partnership between East Street Arts, Artist-in-Residence Taipei and Platform Asia and has been supported by Arts Council England and the Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs.
