We’re checking in at the Art Hostel, highlighting how incredible the rooms and spaces are. We’re looking at Alison Smith’s incredible Ziggy Wingle.
With a bold but comforting colour palette throughout, a mixture of shapes and simplicity come together to create a space in which to play. Some of the walls form large pegboards – allowing those staying to move shapes around and reconfigure the design of the room. With four lower single beds and four higher bunk beds, it’s great for groups after a long day out in Leeds.
Games and puzzles, toys and abstract paintings, informed the design of the room, which was brought together by artist and maker Alison Smith along with pupils from local school, Shakespeare Primary. In a process of experimentation, they played with shapes and patterns to look at how they interact with one another and how play informs making.
Ziggy Wingle is all about releasing your inner child – from the colour-changing neon light, to the moveable pegboard wall and shelving with wooden games and houses. Where better to give yourself the space to play?
