More about David Steans’ work:

David Steans is an artist and writer based in Leeds, UK. He works across text, moving image, sound, installation and 2D media such as collage. He is influenced by genre horror, metafiction, and various vernacular aesthetics. He tries to create a sense of disquiet or strangeness in technologies of cultural production, and often sets works within fictional or fictionalised bureaucratic institutions. His art and writing overlap and inform one another. Across both he uses recursive or ‘nested’ forms of storytelling, filtered through the uncanny effects of new media. Images and concepts are cannibalised from work to work, a kind of ‘versioning’ he associates with the mutations and spectral residues of genre dynamics.

Recent projects include Mummy Hood Nesting Forest (2022), commissioned by Primary, Nottingham, and Puppy the Goblin (2020), screened at Tate Britain in 2022. In 2021 he was commissioned to write a new text, Curtainz, for ‘Documents of Contemporary Art: Magic’. In 2018, Deptford X published his book of experimental horror stories, ‘From the Lounge’, now held in Tate Library. He teaches Fine Art at Leeds Arts University.
