We’re delighted to announce that Anita Kumari has been appointed to take up the role of Executive Director in July 2023 as Karen Watson retires.
Anita will join Jon Wakeman, co-founder and artistic director, in the leadership of East Street Arts, following 15 years experience at New Art Exchange (NAE) – the biggest gallery in the UK that is dedicated to artists and communities from the Global Ethnic Majority.
“I’m excited to join East Street Arts, a leading artist-led organisation impacting social and economic change through impactful and inclusive arts within Leeds and further afield.
“My experience and values align strongly with what East Street Arts brings to the community and am looking forward to a refreshed co-leadership model with Jon and the team.” Anita Kumari
Having progressed from Support Services Manager to Head of People and Operations during her time at NAE – with additional experience across local authority, charity, and arts sectors – Anita will bring expertise in people management, enterprise and operations to enhance our work. She also has a strong commitment to equality and equity, particularly within marginalised communities and, as a community collaborator, she is passionate about raising aspirations and expanding access to art for families in deprived socio-economic communities.
“I’m delighted to welcome Anita to join me in taking East Street Arts in new directions, as we continue to increase and diversify our programme and audiences. I have no doubt that she will help us to continue to enhance our reputation, and the role that we play in our local and national communities.” Jon Wakeman
