Artist James Sewell is currently in residence in the Patrick Studios Project Space. The residency gives Sewell space to experiment, develop ideas and create new work, bringing together his ongoing investigations into science, philosophy, technology and art.

James Sewell is a process-led artist whose practice explores nonlinearity through sound, image, diagrams and assemblage.
By leaving mechanisms and abandoned experiments visible, Sewell’s work exists somewhere between an incomplete construction and a finished performance. Creating diagrams inspired by mathematical models and nonlinear structures, these geometric drawings become musical scores to compose disruptive and dissonant sounds. Working with analogue and digital technologies he builds and adapts his own instruments, constructs objects from found and discarded materials, and creates bespoke digital interfaces through which live performances are realised.
He works with abandoned, obsolete and broken technology, embracing limitations and failings. Through recycling and reconfiguring he creates audiovisual loops that are subject to degradation and interference, creating physical sound, visual repetition and complex systems that continually shift, breakdown and reform.
Existing somewhere between sound art and music, his work is often the culmination of an extended period of site-specific experimentation, where the performance space and studio are one and the same.
