Teresa Flavin is an artist, illustrator and author of books for children and young people. She has illustrated for many publishing houses in the UK and abroad. Her children’s art historical fantasy trilogy, The Blackhope Enigma series (Templar Publishing UK and Candlewick press USA), has won critical acclaim here and in the USA. Her recent novel for teens, Jet Black Heart (Barrington Stoke), is a supernatural time travel story set on the North Yorkshire moors and Fossil Coast. It features Teresa’s original illustrations throughout.
When she is not writing and illustrating, Teresa creates lyrical mixed-media works that reflect her love of magic and wonders, folk and fairy tales, colour and texture. She is currently working on a series of paintings inspired by the 18th century water gardens at Studley Royal in North Yorkshire. These are part of a larger visual exploration of the ‘re-enchantment’ of historic sites Teresa has undertaken with a group of colleagues at East Street Arts.
She is also working on an East Street Arts Open Studios commission to map the three Leeds studio buildings, building links between the studio-holders and putting the spaces into a historical context.
Teresa speaks widely in schools, libraries and at literary festivals. She leads writing, illustration and bookmaking workshops for young people and adults. She is actively involved with several online networks of writers and illustrators and tweets regularly about books, illustration and curiosities at @TeresaFlavin.
