Ruth Fitton

As an artist, my interests lie in draftsmanship, the portrayal of form, and the subtlety of colour. A fascination with human character translates these interests into a passion for portrait painting.

I paint from life as much as possible, the better to observe form and colour, and the better to see how different emotions transform the face of each sitter. To bring together likeness and character in a portrait which communicates directly with the viewer is my metier.

I work almost always in oils – I love their versatility and receptiveness; how edges can be brought forward or pushed back through brushwork, and how forms can be gradually sculpted from flat to full. I frequently paint alla prima. I like my paintwork to have a textured appearance and to maintain a fresh, immediate feel. Between commissioned works, I experiment as much as possible to develop my artistic style.

Recent events include exhibition with the Society of Women Artists (London, 2015, 2017), exhibition by invitation at the Great Yorkshire Show (Harrogate, 2016-17) and the title of Artist in Residence at the Great North Art Show (Ripon, 2016). My paintings hang in private and corporate collections across the UK.
