Nick Claiden

I have had no formal training in art although I have been painting and drawing all my life. The stained glass is a more recent departure and I have attended courses in stained leaded and fused glass.

My subject matter is strongly narrative and influenced by where I live. I have done a lot of work based on Leeds and Fountains Abbey
Having found my subject, I can respond to it in a number of different ways. For me some images are best interpreted in painting on paper, some glass sculptures.

In my paintings I work in mixed media using watercolours applied thickly, with resist and washing out, and combined with oil crayon, pencil, and acrylic.
With the glass I use traditional methods but with a new twist, in that most of my work comprises, free standing glass pieces set into hard wood or concrete bases. I use traditional methods of leaded glass with painting, etching and engraving, as well as fused glass.

My work has been exhibited in Cupola Gallery in Sheffield, in the Station Gallery, Richmond, in the Leeds Open, and in ‘Divided We Fall’ in Leeds.
I have exhibited with Lateral at the Creative Arts Hub in Mirfield, in the Larurence Batley Theatre, and in the Holmfirth Fringe Art Festival. I have also taken part in Staithes Art and Heritage Festival, Chapel Allerton Art Trail and Roundhay Open Studios.
I undertake commissions in stained glass and have a window in the Linton Room at Brantwood.
