Initiated in 2010 as a stand-alone one-night exhibition, Pandhal’s The Panj Piare featured artworks by Buckley, Lewis, Meadley and Steans. Whilst putting the show together the exhibiting artists decided to multiply The Panj Piare, by each taking it in turn to curate their own version in the future. It is essentially a think-tank, a working-through of a model of art-exhibiting based upon obligation and reciprocity. VOLUME 2 is curated by East Street Arts member and studio holder David Steans.
“Like two mirrors turned to face one another the viewer is caught in this infinitely reflexive vortex of artist, practice and artwork. While some may criticize this focus as limiting in its self-interestedness, what seems striking about The Panj Piare as an initiative is the sense of respect these artists and friends have for one another’s work and the camaraderie this commands. By drawing together, assembling and unveiling the work of four fellow artists, Pandhal presented an intimate and very personal exhibition… it may not be too fanciful to imagine we were invited into a workshop/studio, converted for one night into a temple, bearing witness to the rituals and liturgy of a closed order.” Elizabeth Holdsworth 2010
