105+dB is the sound level at which an individual voice is lost in a crowd.

A new sonic artwork about identity, place and participation, using the noise of crowds to question what it means to belong as an individual and as a mass by capturing the 3D sound of football games and recreating the unique sonic architectures in public spaces.

On Saturday 30th April 2016 Invisible Flock recorded the sound footprint of the crowd experiencing Leeds United’s last home match of the season against Charlton Athletic at Elland Road. Using a custom built array of microphones positioned around the stadium they captured not only the sound itself but an exact spatial replica of the scale and location of the noise in 3D space, recording both the roar of the crowd and individual voices.

Rebuilt in the city; transporting the noise of the match for replay in Millennium Square and on Brewery Green. Navigate the roar of the crowd, walking around it as a sculpture, a massive piece of public art, a playful interaction for thousands of people of all ages. Reprogramming sound in civic and public space, and harnessing the popularity of football to create dialogue in unexpected places.

Replaying this match alongside matches recorded in Lille and in Ghent, the work presents an exploration of our similarities and of our differences.

The UK premiere of 105+dB is one of a series of UK exclusives as part of the Yorkshire Festival, a region-wide celebration of art and culture taking place 16 June – 3 July.

Supported by Arts Council England, Leeds Inspired, Leeds United, Yorkshire Festival and The Tetley. This project is part of a partnership project between East Street Arts (Leeds), l’Entorse (Lille, France) and Vooruit (Ghent, Belgium) entitled Ex[s]ports, and funded by EU – Creative Europe.

Invisible Flock:

Invisible Flock are an interactive arts organisation based in Leeds, led by three artsits: Ben Eaton, Victoria Pratt and Richard Warburton.

Recently described in the Guardian as “real innovators” of digital and interactive art we are renowned for creating ground breaking hybrid work across forms. We make highly participatory live and digital work on a large scale.

Drawing from real life, our practice invites people to re-imagine the world they live in and how they participate in it, using technology to incite meaningful encounters.

Our work is characteristically ambitious in its scope and in its approach in re-imagining the role and position of the audience; interactive work that is brought to life by taking part, walking, submitting, or co-creating alongside the artists.
